The Friday of Commencement Weekend doesn't have quite the drama of Saturday's Baccalaureate or Sunday's Commencement, but that doesn't mean that there's calm before the storm. The representative moments that follow illustrate the intensity of the day.
The Class of 2022 was asked to arrive on Garcleon Field at 9:15 a.m. for their class photo. The first senior arrived — solo — and promptly.
After lining up in the shape of their class year on Garcelon Field, students posed for photographers. Dining Services and Advancement staff passed out champagne for a celebratory toast delivered by Associate Dean for International Student Programs James Reese, who then directed them to their next stop of the morning: Commencement rehearsal on the Historic Quad.
After walking onto the Quad, seniors crossed the stage as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Malcolm Hill practiced the pronunciation of their names. Each student then completed a short exit survey with staff members from the Center for Purposeful Work, and finally, received their caps and gowns. Overseeing it all was Associate VP for Dining, Conference & Campus Events Christine Schwartz, with a golf cart at the ready to get her from one event to the next.
The Bardwell Street Tent became the scene of three formal inductions for graduating seniors whose various accomplishments distinguished their Bates careers.
The inductions were to Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, The College Key, which recognizes outstanding Bates students for their academic and extracurricular achievements, and Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. Loved ones watched with pleasure, followed by hugs for all.
A group of beautiful friends gathered at the Puddle for their first cap and gown portrait. Several photographers recorded the moment.
The Office of Intercultural Education hosted a dessert reception for seniors, family, and friends under the tent next to Commons, where students and staff spoke about their experiences.
