Each year, the Bates women’s varsity teams open their arms to local youngsters to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
NGWSD recognizes student-athletes, champions, coaches, administrators, lawmakers, and others who are committed to providing equitable access to sports for all girls and women.
In various clinics inside Gray Athletic Building on Feb. 11, the youngsters got a chance to learn a little something about many of the 16 women's varsity sports that Bates offers, including rowing.
“It was wonderful to watch all of the young community members engage with us,” said Casey Winter ’23 of Malvern, Pa., a biochemistry major and a captain of the rowing team.
“I think it is very special how we are able to share our love for our sport with young kids,” said Chrissy Chu ’25, a member of the volleyball team from Old Tappan, N.J.
By sharing their love for their various sports, the Bates students were able to “show kids how there are multiple ways to stay active,” said Chu.
Children often learn sports like soccer or softball at a young age. But rowing? Not so much, said Casey Winter.
Winter and her teammates taught youngsters how to use a rowing machine, also known as an erg, short for “ergometer.”
“It was great to watch as many of them became inspired and intrigued!”
For volleyball player Chu, seen below, the event transcended sports. “It was a way to show kids what it is like to be a part of another community or extended family.”
“Having supportive teammates and coaches can help kids with a lot of skills that go beyond the field or the court,” said Chu.
“The entire rowing team was very grateful for the opportunity to share our sport with so many young people," said Casey Winter.
After the clinics, participants enjoyed pizza and made signs with the Bates athletes to help cheer on the women’s basketball game for their Senior Day game later in the afternoon.
As the women’s basketball team entered Alumni Gym to take on the visiting Wesleyan squad, the young athletes lined the entryway to greet them. Once the game began, the children waved their homemade signs and cheered as only the most loyal fans can.
And what a way to end the day: Bates defeated Wesleyan, 54–46
