What Senior Day lacked in numbers — Chelsea Nason was the sole honoree — it made up for in emotion, drama, and, in the end, pure elation

Cold weather, warm hearts

On a frigid Valentine’s Day, the scene was a warm and cozy Alumni Gym for the final home game of the year for the women’s basketball team. Williams was heavily favored, but all Bobcat hearts hoped that Chelsea Nason ’16 of Boxford, Mass., would have a sweet Senior Day.

Positive signs

With Alumni Gym decorated with signs and slogans created by teammates to support their senior captain, Nason accepts pre-game hugs and congratulations from her family and her coach, Alison Montgomery.

Hands Down

Passing through a happy gauntlet, Nason bounds onto the floor during introductions.

Game On

In the first quarter, after Nason hits a driving layup to extend the Bates lead to 13–9, Williams is forced to call an early timeout. Meanwhile, Nina Davenport ’18 of Freeport, Maine, pours in eight of her game-high 26 points in the opening frame.

At the half, it’s all Bates, 31-20. But that’s not all.

Down but not out

In the third quarter, Nason fears an ankle injury after taking a fall and waits for Bates trainer Nancy Fournier’s evaluation. Thankfully, she walks it off and all systems are go.

Pouring it on

Facing full-court pressure with less than three minutes left in the game, Davenport hits a dagger three to extend the Bates lead to 11 points.

A late Ephs rally is snuffed out by Lyse Henshaw ’18 of Brunswick, Maine, who hits four late free throws.

Williams scores 19 points in the wide-open fourth quarter. But so does Bates. It all adds up for the Bobcats, who emerge with a 59–49 victory, their first over the Ephs since 2009.
